Natural Vitamin D the Sunshine Vitamin
For a long time vitamin D was recognized only for its role in bone health. Because vitamin D is made by the body under the influence of sunlight and because milk is fortified with it, the majority of health practitioners believed that the general population was receiving sufficient amounts of vitamin D. In recent years the fear of skin cancer prompted many people to avoid sunlight and to cover their skin with sunscreens.

Lately, vitamin D is in the center of everyone's attention and new scientific discoveries regarding the importance of vitamin D on men's health and women's health are being realized on a daily basis. Vitamin D can be classified as a steroid hormone which assists calcium absorption from the small intestine. In addition, vitamin D help allows for the adequate incorporation of calcium into the bone matrix.

Postmenopausal women are often encouraged to increase their calcium intake in order to prevent postmenopausal bone loss. However when women take increased amounts of calcium while being vitamin D deficient, the excess of calcium that cannot be built into the bones circulates throughout the body and becomes deposited in the cardiovascular system causing hardening of the arteries as well as hypertension. This can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Kidney stones and breast calcifications can also results from an excess of circulating calcium.

  • Vitamin D can ease the intensity of aches and pains associated with fibromyalgia as well as chronic lower back pain and nonspecific musculoskeletal pains.
  • Vitamin D improves carbohydrate metabolism and decreases insulin resistance. Adequate levels of vitamin D in the body also decrease one’s risk for developing type I diabetes.
  • Vitamin D has also been researched to protect against cancer especially breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer. In clinical trails involving prostate cancer patients, scientists determined that vitamin D expresses its' anti-carcinogenic properties by protecting the integrity of normal healthy prostate cells, while disrupting the growth of cancerous prostate cells through oxidation.
  • Low levels of vitamin D are associated with increased rates of depression. Vitamin D is a major antioxidant for brain tissue; it also improves learning ability, memory and social behavior.
Furthermore, vitamin D is necessary for the immune system and has a balancing effect on healthy immune system function. A vitamin D insufficiency can negatively influence auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis. Natural vitamin D supplements have also been observed to assist with other health conditions such as allergies and asthma.

Vitamin D plays a critical role in protection against influenza, including H1N1 swine flu. Vitamin D assists the body in the production of antimicrobial peptides that are the first line of defense against a constant onslaught of bacteria and viruses. These antimicrobial peptides are abundantly produced by the cells of the respiratory tract to protect against inhaled microorganisms.

Besides these many health benefits that vitamin D provides, it also acts as a strong anti-aging vitamin. Vitamin D increases one's life span by altering the genetic expression.  This safeguards against the development of diseases that would result due to one's genetic predisposition.

Nowadays, the majority of people (including those who live in southern countries) have vitamin D deficiency. This vitamin D deficiency can be attributed to unnatural lifestyle habits such as spending an excessive amount of time indoors. The daily sunlight exposure needed to allow the body to produce an adequate amount of vitamin D is approximately 30 minutes per day, exposing the face, arms and hands.
Morning and afternoon sun is the safest. Aging skin requires longer sun exposure to generate the same level of vitamin D as young skin. Also, people with a light complexion require less sun exposure to synthesize vitamin D then people with a darker complexion. This is due to melanin (the darkening pigment of the skin) that lowers the production of vitamin D. Obese individuals have lower levels of vitamin D because a large amount of body fat inactivates vitamin D.

To evaluate the level of vitamin D in your body, a blood test can be performed that checks the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The optimal levels are considered those of 50 to 80 ng/ml.

If your vitamin D levels are low, supplementation with natural vitamin D3 is recommended.

Once again it shows that when we try to mess with nature we end up messing up our own health.

Because of the way people live today, its no wonder why there's so much gloom, doom, depression and disease in our "Modern Society". Humans create their own diseases by dwelling far off from the way nature designed our bodies to function. We put so much strain on our body that it simple cannot handle the overload. THE SOLUTION: STEP OUTDOORS AND SOAK UP SOME SUN!!!

I was one of those people who though I was getting enough vitamin d from milk. I though it was odd when my doctor wanted to test me for what he suspected could be a possible vitamin d deficiency, but when my lab results came back it turned out that I was really really low on vitamin d. My Doctor suggested I take a much higher dose of natural vitamin d3 supplement (especially since i get frequent colds each winter). I hope this winter I will be cold free.

We must realize that we humans were not created to live indoor lifestyles. It's not natural to remain indoors 24/7 as most people do. Each day that passes, makes it seem as though humanity is digging itself deeper into the pit of eternal darkness. Will anything save us?

To get to us the sunlight has to travel a hundred million miles. For us to benefit from it all we have to do is go outside. During the times when we cannot get loads of sunlight, there is a great need for vitamin D supplementation.

Where vitamin D can make a big difference is with breast cancer. Studies show that it can reduce breast cancer by 70%. One scientist disagrees. He says that enough vitamin D can "virtually eradicate breast cancer."

The National Cancer Institute had sponsored a 2 day event for scientists to show their findings with vitamin D. Here is a 29 minute video that sums it all up. http://vit-d.notlong.com All that is left now is to let people know about it. Most women between the ages of 34 and 43 that die, die of breast cancer. This can be greatly reduced or eradicated with lifeguard levels of vitamin D.

Just goes to show that the natural cure is the only cure. Vitamin D is naturally produced by our own body when our skin contacts the sun's rays. Our society has shunned itself away from the natural way of life and that is the reason why diseases (such as breast cancer) are ever escalating. People want to control and govern what should be left untouched. Thankfully the "Green Movement" is spreading awareness, but we will need a tidal wave to wash away the corruption that has embedded itself into our world.

In the above video, it says that people should get lifeguard levels of vitamin D. Lifeguards are out in the sun all day while only wearing a bathing suit. That vitamin D is free so it cannot be marketed. You cannot market something that is free. Air is free and you cannot market air but if you do not breathe it, then you will die.

Its good to see more talk of the benefits of vitamin D these days. Most people have really taken for granted the value of vitamin D and others just did not realize how much potential this humble vitamin contained. If the ancients had known of this miraculous little vitamin, they would have deemed it a gift from the Gods (seeing as vitamin d is naturally produced the body when our skin comes in contact with the sun's rays). What is even better to know is that in order to receive this heavenly gift all we need to do is go outdoors on a sunny day. If only it were that easy to get the rest of our essential nutrients.

Vitamin D is being heavily marketed. No doubt it possesses some pretty extraordinary health benefits, but there is also a lot of quack on the health benefits of vitamin d you have to distinguish the difference between the facts and puffery. I believe this blog is one of the few I come along that thank goodness lists THE FACTS. Anything overdone, over-exaggerated, even the most beneficial such as vitamin d health benefits, can be misleading and dangerous to the well-being of others.
